Korean War
Japan ruled Korea since 1910, until the end of WW II when Japanese forces in North Korea surrendered to the Soviet Union and the Japanese forces in the south surrendered to the United States. Both nations, now separated, were split at the 38th parallel, which is 38 degrees north latitude. 1948 South Korea became an independent nation and North Korea became a communist nation. 1950 began the Korean War, North Korea invaded south. The U.S. did not want another nation to fall to communists so we sent air and naval support and we sent troops from numerous nations under the control of General Douglas MacArthur. North Korea pushed southward and took South Korea's capital city, Seoul. MacArthur's forces then countered and trapped about half of North Korea's army. MacArthur then pushed NK troops past the 38th parallel, this means that the war was now offensive instead of defensive, the UN supported this and wanted Korea to be reunited. We then reached close to the Chinese border, they did not like this and pushed us back and the Capital was retaken by the communist forces. For a couple more years fighting continued but neither side advanced. MacArthur wanted to bomb china and bring the war into china but Truman was scared it would spark WW III since the Chinese were allies with the Soviets. MacArthur was eventually let go for his crazy ideas by Truman. An armistice was eventually signed in July 1953 and the war was agreed upon as a stalemate.
